Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic was a British luxury passenger liner. She sank on April 14-15, 1912, during her maiden voyage to New York from Southampton. Of the 2,240 passsengers and crew on board, about 1,500 lost their lives in the disaster. Titanic has inspired many books, articles and movies. She was the largest passenger steam ship the world have ever seen. She was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She was under the command of Captain Edward John Smith who died in the disaster.

History[]

In 1907 the Cunard Line had the RMS Lusitania (who sank in 1915) and RMS Mauretania on the popular route to New York. The sister ships were primarily known for their speed, were very succesful and the largest ocean liners at the time in 1907. The press was full of praise for these beautiful steamers, who were called a marvel, no matter how you

As J.P. Morgan, the infamous American banker and Joseph Bruce Ismay looked at ways to catch up to their rivals, the chairman of White Star Line decided they would compete on luxury. They would build ships that were still fast but more luxurious. The idea for the Olympic Class ships came at dinner in Lord Pirries house. Lord Pirrie and Joseph Bruce Ismay brainstormed about these new plans. However their first sketch was outdated, old-fashioned and was looked too much like previous models.

Thomas Andrews, the main architect at Harland&Wolff, and director Edward Wilding were more innovative than these 2 conservative captain's of industry, and came up with a much better and much more impressive design. After everything had been thought out, construction of the massive liners began at the Harland and Wolf in Belfast, Ireland. The RMS Olympic was launched first. A year later, her sister Titanic was built and ready. This massive liner was to be 882 feet (270metres) long and weighed 44,000 Tons, only a tiny bit bigger than her sister. This was huge for her time. She was inspected on May 31 in 1911 by Lord Pirrie, before given the approval to be launched.

She was put in a dry dock where the ships final touches were added and she was fitted out. Then she was Sea Trials. Among the Amenities were the Gymnasium, The Indoor Swimming Pool, The Promenade decks, and more. There was also 2 lavish and luxurious Parlor Suites, which featured a sitting room, 2 bedrooms, a dining room, a private wash/bath, and a 50 foot private promenade. Both suites were reserved on the maiden voyage for Joseph Bruce Ismay and Lord Pirrie, but after Lord Pirrie died, she was reserved for millionaire Sir Charles Williams and his Father. Finally on April 10,1912 the Titanic departed on her Maiden Voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, USA.

She made a first stop in Cherbourg in France, and the next day in Queenstown, to take on more passengers as well as drop some off, and then set sail for New York. Sadly on April 14, 1912 the Titanic's Look Out saw an iceberg too late, less than a half a mile away and they couldn't avoid it in time, at the last moment the Titanic turned, but still scraped along an iceberg which caused her to have ruptures in her hull on her starboard side, which let water in at a rapid rate. Nothing could be done to prevent the inevatable: she started sinking, and foundered in the middle of the night, at 2:20 A.M, 2 hours and 40 minutes she lasted after impact. She had 2209 souls onboard, and only 706 people managed to escape in 20 lifeboats, which wasn't enough and they weren't launched on time either, the last two floated of the sinking bridge. 1503 people couldn't escape the ship, and sadly perished thanks to the freezing cold North Atlantic.

Her two wreck parts were not found until 1985, by Dr. Robert Ballard.

Currently, she is still the most famous ship in the world. Her reputation has lasted for more than 2 centuries. It is possible that Titanic's story and legacy is and always will be remembered thanks to her notorious story. Her story has remained for years now and is said to have "captivated people's imagination in every way".
